varicose vein creamsYou’ve probably seen your share of varicose veins and spider veins creams and lotions in advertisements in magazines and on TV. You’ve probably also wondered if these products work. It sounds a lot better and easier than going through a surgery right? In short, some topical creams and lotions out there may be able to hide the appearance of these veins, but there is yet to be any true product that has been scientifically proven to get rid of unsightly, bulging veins. These products tend to provide temporary relief, but not a real, long-term solution to the vein problem.

Many creams or lotions that are sold contain vitamin K; this vitamin can help temporarily improve the appearance of the vein on your skin by forming a transient clot in the vein. Eventually, this clot disappears and the vein comes back.  Other supplements or creams, lotions, or gels, may help hydrate or firm the skin, which can improve the appearance of the veins and surrounding skin, but it cannot treat or remove the veins themselves. Some of these creams may even temporarily relieve any discomfort the veins are giving you, but remember…it’s just temporary, and the real root of your pain is still there.

Overall, creams or gels or lotions cannot rid the body of varicose or spider veins, they merely reduce visibility or symptoms. Although you probably don’t like the look of these veins, their “ugly” appearance isn’t your only problem. The veins are a potential sign that you may have or could develop a more serious health condition. The reason behind why these veins appeared on your body in the first place are the result of a bunch of different factors including your age, gender, lifestyle choices, weight, genetics, and if you’re a smoker. Some of these creams may promise to prevent these veins from ever appearing or get rid of them completely, but if you inherited the right gene or have a venous insufficiency due to life choices, there’s no way a cream can stop a varicose vein from appearing or make it disappear.

If you currently do not have any varicose or spider veins, the best ways to prevent them (if you don’t genetically develop them) is to exercise regularly, don’t smoke, avoid standing, and avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time.

Topical creams, lotions, and gels, only treat the surface of your vein problem. In reality, these products aren’t targeting or eliminating the condition or problem that lies beneath the surface of the skin. If you have varicose veins, you should seek out a vein specialist to properly diagnose your condition and talk about the best treatment for your veins.
