yogaIt’s no secret that varicose veins cause pain and discomfort. The veins under the skin are inflated and bulge onto the outer surface of the skin. This swelling of the veins causes pain for many individuals. Although they are unsightly, these veins are also a sign of a serious health issue developing. When a person has varicose veins, it’s in his or her best interest to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and properly treat and/or remove these diseased veins from the legs or other parts of the body. However, there are things a person can do to temporarily relieve some of the pain these veins bring, as well as prevent the onset of more developing. One way a person can relieve pain or prevent varicose veins is through exercise; one exercise that can help is yoga.

Yoga is a low-impact form of exercising; this type of exercise is comprised of long-stretching poses and meditation and mindfulness periods that are beneficial to the body. Below, we’ve listed the best yoga poses that can help blood flow in the legs and improve discomfort in damaged veins.

Raised Leg Pose – The raise leg is when a person lays flat down on a mat on the back and raises their legs straight up in the air. It is a common, simple pose that helps proper blood circulation in the legs.

Leg Lock Pose – In this pose, a person will lay on his or her back and pull one knee up to the chest. Then, he or she will touch his/her forehead with the knee and breathe slowly while the other leg is extended on the floor. Legs are then switched and the move is repeated. This move should be done 10 times. Just like the raised leg pose, the leg lock pose is great for circulation.

Legs on the Wall Pose – This pose is very similar to the raised leg post. A person will lay flat on his/her back and extend the legs up the wall.  Their butt will be up against the wall, and they will be at a 90-degree angle.

Other great poses: Shoulder Stand Pose, Cow Pose, Rolling and Rocking, Wind-Relieving Pose, Standing-Forward Bend, Fish Pose, and Seated Forward Bending.

By practicing yoga regularly, a person’s legs will begin to feel less achy and heavy. All of these poses help bring blood back to the heart, which improves and increases circulation. Although a person’s pain may be lifted just a bit, it’s not a good idea to live with varicose veins. The varicose veins could turn into something more serious.
