venous insufficiency

Have you been making a lot of trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night lately? It may not be your drinking habits or age. In fact, this frequent urination could be cause by something quite more serious problem like venous insufficiency. Not only do varicose veins cause pain when you’re awake, but they can keep you up at night from constantly getting up to use the bathroom, which will disrupt your sleep and make you tired throughout the week.

When a person has a venous insufficiency, it can present itself in several different ways. Sometimes, the signs are obvious and other times they’re not. The most common signs of venous insufficiency are varicose veins and skin ulcers. Often, people with venous insufficiency and high venous pressure will develop swelling in the legs from water and a protein (serum) leaking from the thin-walled veins into surrounding areas during sitting, standing, and/or walking, which are activities that require leg dependency. The serum that leaks returns to the venous circulation through the lymphatic system when a person is lying down or sleeping. When this serum mixes with the venous blood, the kidneys filter the excess water from the blood and store it in the bladder, turning it into urine. Once the bladder is full, the body tells the person they need to urinate; there is a correlation between the amount of fluid collected in the legs with the number of times a person must go to the bathroom. If a person is urinating more than once in the middle of the night, this is a good sign there is a venous insufficiency.

With this venous insufficiency, trips to the bathroom will increase over time. Of course, there are many reasons why a person’s body may have access fluid, but if a person has visible varicose veins, that is a good sign an insufficiency in the veins is causing the frequent nighttime urination.
