spider veins west florida vein centerNearly 40 million people in the United States of America in 2019 are suffering from varicose and spider veins. That includes a current estimate of approximately 50% of the population over 50 with vein issues. With it being so prevalent you would assume it was a widely discussed subject but many people never say anything out of embarrassment for the way it makes your legs look. There are a lot of misconceptions floating around – let’s try here today to get the facts out.

The Most Common Misconceptions

MYTH: Spider and Varicose veins are the same things – While both sider and varicose veins are caused by leaking or damaged valves, spider veins are generally seen as a cosmetic problem, while varicose veins can be a sign of deeper health issues.

Spider veins are smaller and appear in spiderweb patterns. They lay flat under the skin. Varicose veins buckle and bend and twist. They actually bump and raise the skin and have only random patterns.

MYTH: Varicose veins are a cosmetic problem and pose no threat to your health – False. Varicose veins may be unattractive, but that does not make them just a cosmetic problem. Varicose veins are often a sign of more serious diagnoses, such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) that can lead to blood clots and ulcers. Treating veins in the early stages is helpful in improving the long-term outcome.

MYTH: Varicose veins can be treated and cured at home – If at home cures actually worked there would be no need for the massive training Vein Specialists go through and receive. While yes, there are things that those with varicose veins can do at home to help alleviate symptoms, diseased veins cannot be healed at home. There is no reversing damage.

There is still evidence that at home “remedies” can work hand in hand with medical techniques. It has been shown that some will help you live a more comfortable lifestyle. Regulation of your weight and diet, elevation of the legs and feet while sitting or laying down, exercising and staying active, quit smoking cigarettes, avoid wearing high heels, wear compression stockings. All of these can contribute to better overall leg and vein health.

MYTH: Only women get varicose veins – Men are not immune to vein issues. While yes, 55% of the cases are seen in women, men still have their fair share. Vein disorders are more common in women because of hormones, pregnancy, and birth control, but there are many other factors for developing vein disease that is not exclusive to women. These factors can include – age, heredity, weight, sedentary or active lifestyle, and your job may also contribute to which men develop varicose veins.

MYTH: Treatment is too expensive. Remember, varicose veins are a valid medical condition with the potential for dangerous progression, most insurance companies will cover their treatment and removal. As coverage plans will vary, it’s always best if you speak with your insurance provider before making any decisions.
