compression stockings west florida vein center tampaCompression stockings and socks are used by those with vein issues as well as athletes. Compression garments feel good and help support good circulation. Compared to regular hosiery compression stockings are comprised of stronger elastic creating pressure at certain points throughout the legs, namely in the feet, ankles, and knees.

The elastics are the tightest around the ankles and they gradually become less constrictive until reaching the thighs. They place pressure on the legs increasing the blood flow velocity and the ability to work on the weakened valves.

Compression stockings work by compressing the skin, muscles, veins, and arteries on the surface. This forces the blood being recirculated to push through narrower channels then it has been. The result is an increase in arterial pressure, more blood being returned to the heart, and less blood flowing backward and pooling in the lower legs and ankles.

Compression stockings are typically recommended for:

  • Edema, or swelling
  • Aching legs
  • Varicose veins
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Spider veins
  • Phlebitis
  • Pregnancy
  • Lymphedema
  • Economy Class Syndrome (ECS)
  • Lipodermatosclerosis

Compression stockings are available in a variety of styles that can be worn under clothing or on their own.

There are two types: gradient stockings and anti-embolism stockings.

Gradient stockings are designed to promote improved valve performance and faulty leg vein valves, they are typically recommended for ambulatory patients that are prone to blood clots, edema, and blood pooling in the lower extremities.

Anti-embolism stockings (sometimes referred to as thromboembolism-deterrent hose) have been designed to support venous and lymphatic drainage. Both stocking types allow compression to be applied as needed throughout the legs. Because most compression stockings are now made to be indistinguishable from traditional dress stockings, no one ever has to know you are wearing them at all.

Compression stockings can do wonders for a patient’s vein health. It is important to say that they can also bring a sense of comfort and relief to some of the more painful physical symptoms of venous disorders as well.

Compression stockings are available over-the-counter at many grocery and drugstores as well as at online retailers, so speak with Dr. Zuzga at West Florida Vein Center today to discuss whether compression stockings are right for you. www.westfloridaveincenter.com. (727) 712-3233.
