varicose veins west florida vein center dr. mark zuzgaAs we begin to age a natural progression of bodily changes occur in both men and women. The onset of varicose veins is not a natural expected part of aging. Many adults and seniors never experience vein issues in their lifetime. This is why when varicose veins show up, its vital to go to a vein specialist and get them looked at. There very likely could be underlying conditions.

Varicose veins are caused by venous insufficiency. Vein disease happens when the normally strong blood transport tubes breakdown, deteriorate, and collapse. This collapse leads to blockages. Where there are blockages, blood pools in an attempt to push through and eventually will redirect, much like a river, but in the mean time it will put pressure on the damaged area which expands and swells and eventually begins to twist and coil the injured veins. This is what you see visibly as varicose and even small spider veins.

Vein issues may first present as simply an unsightly nuisance. Along with the visual cue, you may also begin to experience leg pain, tiredness, heavy feelings, aching, and even redness, warmth, swelling, and edema. If left untreated too long ulcerations from lack of blood flow can also develop especially in those with diabetes. These ulcerations can be difficult to treat and heal. With more blood stuck at the surface of your leg, even a small cut can cause major bleeding and become a problem rather quickly.

The most dangerous of the potential symptoms would be a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). A DVT is a blood clot inside of the vein which can block the flow of blood completely and even worse, if the clot breaks free it can make its way to your heart (causing a heart attack), to your lungs (pulmonary embolism) or even up to the brain resulting in a stroke.

The best time to treat vein issues is as soon as you notice them. The sooner you catch it, the easier and more full your recovery will be.
