Myth: Prolonged Sitting or Standing Does not cause Varicose Veins.

Fact: Those spending significant time on their feet are at an elevated risk for developing varicose veins. If you work on your feet every day, take time at the end of the day to relax and elevate your feet up above your heart giving your circulation a boost.

Myth: Crossing legs often contributes to varicose veins and Vein Disease

False: Crossing your legs has very little to do with development of varicose veins.

Myth: Spider veins and varicose veins are the same thing.

False: While both varicose and spider veins are caused by damaged valves inside the veins they present differently. Spider veins show up as a web of blue or red veins just under the surface of the skin, and do not protrude from beneath the skin. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins do not pose a medical risk.

Myth: Men do not develop varicose veins

False: While men are less likely than women to develop varicose veins, are still at risk. 42% of men develop varicose veins by the time they reach their 60s.

Myth: Dehydration has been shown to contribute to varicose veins

True: Dehydration has some correlation to varicose veins. It is important to stay hydrated for a huge array of reasons, helping to keep veins and circulatory health in check is just one of them.

Myth: Varicose veins are a cosmetic issue and don’t need to be treated

False: Varicose veins, though often thought of as a cosmetic nuisance, can actually progress to vein disease a more serious medical condition. Left untreated symptoms can include leg pain, swelling, skin damage and ulcers.

Myth: Genetics and age do not factor into the development of varicose veins

False: Genetics and age are two of the largest contributors to vein disease. If you are over 50 and have a family history of vein disease keep an eye out.
